On March 31st, Ukrainians will vote for the next president, and among the candidates are some familiar faces, such as current president Petro Poroshenko, but there’s also a surprising leader in the poll who is a newcomer, Volodymyr Zelensky. The Crimea was the only region of Ukraine in the s where separatism arose and inter-ethnic conflict potentially could have taken place between the Ukrainian central government, ethnic Russians in the Crimea, and Crimean Tatars. Such a conflict would have inevitably drawn in Russia and Turkey. Ukraine also was a nuclear military power until This book analyses two inter-related issues.

According to Ukrainian senior officials, Russia has assembled thousands of its troops in the Moscow-occupied peninsula.
This is not accidental, though. The Crimean peninsula has long suffered from water shortages, but these are now often exacerbated by the ever-more frequent winters with little rain or snow. In the last several months, these difficulties have become critical. According to Russian officials, the region has seen its reserves of potable water decline by 60 percent under Russian occupation.
Also, it will entirely run out of supplies of this critical natural resource sometime in the summer. Where did drinking water come from in , thus shortly before the Russian annexation? The object bears seven notches and comes from an archaeological level attributed to a Micoquian industry dated to between 38 and 43 cal kyr BP. Our study aims to examine the degree of regularity and intentionality of this set of notches through their technological and morphometric analysis, complemented by comparative experimental work. Microscopic analysis of the notches indicate that they were produced by the to-and-fro movement of a lithic cutting edge and that two notches were added to fill in the gap left between previously cut notches, probably to increase the visual consistency of the pattern.
Multivariate analysis of morphometric data recorded on the archaeological notches and sets of notches cut by nine modern experimenters on radii of domestic turkeys shows that the variations recorded on the Zaskalnaya set are comparable to experimental sets made with the aim of producing similar, parallel, equidistant notches.

Now, however, a new study has provided perhaps the most detailed look to date on the true state of political and economic play on the peninsula. The results are striking. These people have been replaced through an influx of Russians—mostly civil servants, military personnel, or retirees—who have been given significant economic perks by the Russian government for resettling there.
And this population shift is still a work in progress. Economic conditions on the peninsula, meanwhile, have deteriorated markedly under Russian rule. In just one example, Crimean meat production fell by an estimated 84 percent over the course of

The decision to build the bridge was taken by the Russian President in April , just after the annexation of Crimea. Ukraine has also stressed the negative effects of the investment on the environment, fishing and shipping.
